Our third and last mission for 2018 will be a cataract surgical mission to Riobamba, Ecuador.  Over 60% of the indigenous population in Chimborazo Province live in extreme poverty.  Over 240,000 people in Ecuador suffer from blindness. More than half of them could have their vision restored through cataract surgery. There are only a few hundred practicing ophthalmologists serving the 15 million people of Ecuador. The nonprofit  Fibuspam will host our team of 16 members for the week.  They have screened patients from the surrounding rural areas and have over 100 patients ready for us to perform cataract surgery.  We also will have some  members of our team traveling to towns to distribute eyeglasses. The cost of the entire mission will be funded by Barbara and Brian Shore, in memory of Barbara’s mother, Marjorie T Sablow. Through their generosity they are enabling us to perform 100 sight restoring surgeries and truly make a difference in the lives of these people.
